project four

A pocket studio for the convenience of an architecture student for design work during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Introduction

Ever since the world declared a state of emergency due to the spread of the Covid-19 Pandemic earlier this year, people worldwide were forced to stay in their own homes, self-quarantine, and to work from home for the sake of preventing further spreading of the virus.

Architecture students who are used to the comfort of their design studios faced many difficulties and challenges during this time period, especially when it comes to their design classes. Lack of accessibility to the school's facilities disables the students from focusing well and demotivated them. Therefore, we came up with a proposal to design a pocket studio as a solution to this problem.

A few requirements were set before construction of the pocket studio.

Construction Requirements

Must use lightweight material.

Corrugated cardboard

Must be functional.

The pocket studio must be able to accommodate one student to conduct his or her activities.

Must be collapsible.

The pocket studio must be able to be collapsed and to be installed quickly through collapsible mechanisms such as folding, hinging, creasing, concertina, sliding, etc.

Must be portable.

The pocket studio must be able to be carried around easily by the student, by attaching strings or handle on it.

A design concept is made to introduce the purpose of the project, its meaning, and our inspiration for the design.

Design Concept

Wagasa, a traditional Japanese umbrella

Our main inspiration for the Umbruh is an inverted umbrella called the Wagasa, which was pioneered by the Japanese. The umbrella is a significant invention used to shade and protect the user from rain and direct sunlight. Thus, we related the function of the umbrella and applied it to our design.

At the same time, we were also inspired by the Malay proverb, "sediakan payung sebelum hujan" which directly translates to "prepare your umbrella before it starts to rain". This proverb means that we must always be well-prepared for any challenges that we face throughout our lives. We linked this meaning with the Umbruh because it is portable and collapsible, allowing us to carry and install it wherever we want whenever we need it.
