Odunpazari Modern Museum

The Odunpazari Modern Museum is a Turkish Modern Art Museum located in Odunpazari, Eskisehir, Turkey. The building is designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates. The OMM is surrounded by many traditional Ottoman wooden houses. The cantilevered upper volume design of these wooden houses served as an inspiration for the museum's facade design. Thus, the facade consists of stacked boxes with volumes made in aggregation in order to reflect the surrounding urban design.
For this project, I have selected the Odunpazari Modern Museum from Turkey as my precedent study to create the analytique. The OMM is made entirely of stacked wooden blocks, which is a staple characteristic of sustainable architecture.

This precedent study gave me the opportunity to understand stacked interlocking volumes, that can produce a very stable structure. Furthermore, the linear elements together with the clean and fine wooden texture create a very repetitive rhythm that creates a very satisfying facade. Studying the OMM has inspired me that buildings need not be complex in design to create a fascinating building. Although its facade has taken a minimalistic approach, the complexity of its structural design has added much to the beauty of the architectural piece.
